A Guide to Writing Meaningful Wedding Vows
As I sit here, coffee in hand, on the morning of our 3rd anniversary, I am encouraged to share the inspiration behind writing my vows.
July 4th, 2015, the most perfect summer day, on the beach at Semiahmoo Resort, Ali and I made a promise of forever.
During our premarital counseling (which I would highly encourage) our counselor urged us to write our own vows. Whether we read them aloud on our wedding or not, he felt it was important to spend time pondering the.."why we love each other" "how we promise to show it" & "what we will do to fight for it"
Looking back, I am so glad we did this, especially me, having a love language of words of affirmation, this did, and still does, speak to me.
With our friends and family there to supportAli and I were married July 4th, on the most perfect summer day at the beach. I thought it would be appropriate to take a look back on to that special day and give (those in need) a little breakdown of my wedding vows.
When it is time to say I do and devote your life to your future spouse, here are a few pointers on how to write meaningful vows.
Start with the WHEN
When I met you 6 years ago I thought you were the one. I was captured by your beautiful light. I wanted so much to be in that light and (after numerous attempts) you gave me a chance to do so.
When I met you…relive the time in your life when it all began
You can give a little background or story or go straight feels, either way its an easy introduction and sets the tone for vows.
Tell the WHY
I love the way you give love, laughter, and joy to all of those you come into contact with. You are the very best thing that has happened to me; you push me to be a better man, a better son to my parents, a better brother to my siblings, a better friend, a better following of Christ.
What is it that makes you feel the way you do about your person
Do your best to get specific..make it unique and genuine. This will likely be the bulk of words so dig deep and really explore the many reasons why. You can give an example here or share a quick story if it suits you.
WHERE ..envision the journey
My love and adoration grows stronger and stronger as each day passes. I am so proud to be your husband and to join my life with yours. A life to laugh with you, cry with you, grow with you, and create with you. As I stand here today, I marry you with no hesitation or doubt, and my commitment to you is unwavering
That's what marriage is all about, from this day forward, you and I…
Take this opportunity to affirm the plans and wishes you have in store together. Tell her why she made the right decision to marry you. Reiterate your commitment to forever; regardless of what life may bring you.
DECLARE
I promise to love you, encourage you, trust you, and respect you. As one, we will create a home filled with learning, laughter, and compassion. I will care for you, stand beside you, and share with you all of life’s adventures. I will love you and have faith in your love for me through all that life may bring us.
Finish strong with a declaration
Go big here but keep it realistic.. Include something that you will strive for then use it to keep you accountable. (I.e. I Promise to Encourage You.. find ways to encourage in your daily routine). Ali and I chose to finish our vows with a scripture reference that was dear to us...
“You are Truly the One Whom My Soul Loves”
Getting married is one of the most important decision of you life, I encourage YOU to take time to write your own vows as both a reminder and something to keep you accountable to. Premarital counseling is a great opportunity to fully understand the commitment of marriage and can give you inspiration to writing lasting vows. Topics like life, sex, finances, faith, parenting, and so much more are discussed.
TIP: Married Men! Find a copy of your vows and get them framed or printed on something nice(dish towel, blanket, glass) to gift to your spouse. It's never too late to write your own vows if you did go the traditional vows route as well (another nice gift).
